Hello all,

I have OMC 1985 5.0L. I was changing an oil and it has dark brown color. I know that when water in the oil it will have milky color. In my case it was dark brown. I checked spark plugs and none of them are wet. I used my boat around 10 times this season and I always winterize it and change an oil before winter time. Is it possible that oil got that dirty during 10 rides -2-4 hours long each time and how can I check if there is a water inside the oil. During the season I was checking oil via dip stick and it has perfectly normal color.

Any advice?

Thanks

Alex

Re: brown oil

It could just be really dirty, condensation from sitting or the signs of slight water intrusion just getting started.
I would change the oil and give a good run up to temp on the water and drain it again.

Uhm, no offense, but have you ever seen oil before in anything older then new? Maybe i'm missing something here. It will be dark brown. It's normal. Start to worry when it is milky white. That's how you know when water is in the oil. Dark brown... that's normal oil.

I wasn't sure because my used car oil is not that dark even after 6 month driving.
Thanks guys!

Old engines are going to be pretty dirty inside. Even when you change the oil, you never get it all out. It will eventually mix with the new oil after a few days it will probably be noticably darker than new. After a whole season it will definitely be darker.

Re: brown oil

Give it a change and a new filter at winterization. Go fishing.
