Should be tan and run to the cylinder head(s) where the temperature switch is located.

What motor do you have?

The wire for the temperature gauge should go to a separate sender that is also mounted on the cylinder head. That will not sound an alarm.

1. You should replace the temperature switch that is at the end of the broken wire unless the wire can be spliced.

2. In most cylinder heads of that type, the temperature switch is behind a threaded cover which can obviously be removed with a small wrench. The tan wire runs directly through the center of the cover to the temperature switch.

Thermostats control the flow of cooling water after it passes through the engine and have nothing directly to do with the warning system.

Re: brown wire alarm problem please help

The two tan wires should have a blocking diode between them and there should be a continuing tan wire from the port switch leading to the engine harness. The exact configuration will depend on the amperage of the system, 9 amp or 35 amp.
