Working on customers 1972 25hp lower unit and needed the bushing for shift shaft as it was worn quite a bit. Called my friendly Johnrude dealer to see if he had it in stock which he did. Trotted over, shot the bull for a while and got ready to leave when another customer came in. He was needing the cradle for a 1970 20hp. He looked up part # and and it in stock, which then he looks up on computer and low and behold it is ....$125.00 FREAKING DOLLARS!! We both looked at each other and said NO WAY!! He calls someone at BRP to check and that is the price!! He pulled old price book and it was $24 2 years ago so he cuts customer a deal. This cradle fits 1968-1978 18-20-25hp engines. It sounds like BRP is raising the part prices(500%) to force you to buy new:(

it also falls under availability, they have either stored that part for 40 Years, or had to retool (set up) to run that part again. either way that cost $$$.

i have found that most dealer are selling the parts for the same or close to the same price and listed on the BRP order site. where we have to pay shipping of atleast $7.95. the are basically buying from the same place, sure they get a discount. but they have to cover their cost. so if you order from a dealer you actually save the shipping.

Doubt that a 37 year old part is still in production. I you think that price is bad, take the old one down to a machine shop and see how much they charge to make you a couple. Probably make the dealer price look like a bargin.

Supply and demand.

Saw a cherry 1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria go for $125,000 the other day.

Some of my best freinds are auto, and boat mechanics and body men. It helps when you need a part or get something worked on. I'm in the beer business, you probably see where this is going ;)

Parts motor. It's going to come to that pretty soon. If you have an 30+ year old Johnson or Evinrude, the prices for new parts are pretty shocking. It's really worth it to find a parts motor on Craig's list, I think.

1972 and they had the part! If Honda and Yamaha treat boat motor parts like motorcycle parts you could have problems getting a part for an 02 motor. Just points to ponder.

Re: BRP have lost their mind!!

I gave up and sold my '64 Johnson (& parts motor) because my local guy with the NOS stuff was going out of it and the boat motor junk dealer charged me $60 for a shift coupler.

The business model USED TO be build a great product and support it with parts so it could last forever. That was a respected mindset that sold new boat motors.

These days the mindset is a blend of "planned obsolescence" and single-use expectation. That dichotomy shift is why things are becoming too expensive to fix, and excusable to simply dispose of and buy a new one.

Compare the cost of repair of an old VW Beetle to the cost to repair, say, my Saturn. A $250 muffler?! A $65 "dealer-only" brake cable only six inches long!? Great car until you have to start repairing it!

That is how you name that tune for modern manufacturing.
