BRP Water Pump Impeller Slack

I installed a BRP water pump kit on my 150 crossflow today. I noticed there was some rotational play in the impeller after installing the plastic key.

Is this normal?

Is it possible to install the impeller upside down or is it tapered for the key to only fit in the proper direction?

I believe if you turn the impeller upside-down,then the key won`t go in.

There's no upside down, and a little slack is normal. The drive shaft only spins one way and keeps continual tension on the key.
