I heard today why they are closing all the plants.

It is a consolidation deal they are working on, all the glass boats are being moved to one or two facilities and all pontoon production is moving to the Harris-Kayot facility in Ft Wayne, Indiana.

Sounds like a reasonablle idea as long as things are down but if it picks up much I can't imagine trying to put out 6 different models in any number from one plant.

Also heard that Bentley and Crest are having major problems and may not make it which would be a real shame, both are very good companies.

Re: Brunswick update

It looks like Brunswick is just in financial troubles:

Beleaguered boatmaker Brunswick Corp. said it will cut 1,400 more jobs as the company shuts four plants and furloughs workers at three more - the latest round of layoffs as boat sales slump to near-record levels.
The announcement, which sent the manufacturer's stock to an 18-year low - came four months after the suburban Chicago company said it would eliminate 1,000 jobs because of the falling demand for recreational boats amid a poor economic environment.

Counting Thursday's announcement - prompted by worsening financial conditions, including rising oil prices and frozen credit markets - the company has slashed more than a third of its marine work force since the beginning of the year.

Re: Brunswick update

With about 34 brand names, I'd say it's a good time to shrink the product numbers a bit.

Brunswick is closing some plants. See - http://www.brunswick.com/news/newsstories/release/1/1207995.php

You should also be able to access their web cast here - http://www.brunswick.com/investors/investorinformation/events.php

I had no idea that they owned Mercury outboards.

They also own Attwood and Land & Sea (big marine part distributor). The USE TO own Navman until Mitac bought them out (better known as Mio Navigation).

Yes, they are closing some plants, but not all as previous stated.

G3 Boats is also owned by Yamaha so it should not come as a surprise that G3 boats have Yamaha engines. Why do you suppose the vast majority of boats sitting in dealers showrooms and display lots are powered by Mercury Outboards and I/O's? With around 34 brands under the umbrella, it gives them a built-in outlet for their engines. Few people realize they "don't have to" take a Mercury engine. All they need to do is order a "No Pre-rig" boat and install whatever engine they want. Since Brunswick has the dealer by the you know what, they can dictate what those dealers must stock. Alumacraft is one manufacturer that will very gladly accept no pre-rig orders. I have done it twice. In fact I've walked out of showrooms after a sales person (a better title for them is "order taker") said we don't do "no pre-rig orders". If you'd like another treat, walk into a boat dealer and try to buy a Yamaha outboard without buying a boat. Many dealers are no longer dealing in "loose engines" as they call them.

Re: Brunswick update

When Mercury contracts a dealer they have a choice of becomming a package dealer meaning they take 6 boats with Mercury Outboards on them or a loose engine dealer requireing them to purchase 10 engines per year in the box. Same goes with Mercruiser.

Then the service rep comes in and tells the dealer he has to purchase $10,000.00 worth of tool or he wont be a dealer very long. If the are reluctant they only reimburse the dealer 60% of his posted labor rate.

Real nice! Well now there getting the enima they deserve. Their stock went from a high of $50.00 down to $5.00 this morning.

anyone want to buy a Outboard Motor Company?

BOMAR, I am unaware of any ''dog satallite", One of our people was down at the IBEX show in Florida and was talking to vendors, we also have common vendors with other boat builders and they talk so i am sure the info is prett accurate.

Re: Brunswick update

It's not uncommon to have several different brand names come out of one plant. The logistics depend more on the size and style of boat than brand name, if a plant makes 18 to 20' ski boats, it makes no difference what brand name gets put on the side, it's just a sticker put on before it goes out the door. They just group them by size and style, then pick a plant set up to produce that size boat.
