Originally posted by Mr.Ladyfish:
I am the Building Official for the town we live in. It's a small town so it's just a part time deal that I do mainly to contribute to the community. I agree that permits are needed for larger projects but here they have gone overboard. Yesterday I got a call (at my real job)from the city secretary. Some poor guy was replacing his front door and the cops (my enforcers) shut him down. He had to go to city hall, leaving his house wide open with no door, fill out a permit application and pay his $15. I intend to see if I can get the council to back off a little on what requires a permit.

I hate government sticking their nose in everything. Last year when I was appointed the people at city hall had a good laugh because 13 years ago when we first moved here I had a part time construction/remodeling company and was constantly getting caught for doing things without a permit.
Give 'em h*ll, Mr Ladyfish. As necessary as they are, Building departments can be on of the most insidious beauracracies blighting this land. If you can't get them to lighten up, sick Mrs LadyFish on them. Have her run for City Council. And while you are at it, have her do away with these da**ed full time left hand turn signals. :D

I saved the signs from this past spring because I know that 2 more seats are going to be up for grabs in April. ;)

I think I'm going to just make it a little shorter so that it's behind my fence and do it without a permit. :) Nobody will ever see it...

Yeah, I have someone that could see it, but they wouldn't have any idea I didn't have a permit. What's the fine for building without a permit anyway?

Better grab some Vaseline at your next trip to the store if you get caught!

$200 minimum I think for the fine, fee for the plan inspection, and finally the permit fee itself. They can also put a lien of sorts on your home.
Not to mention you have to submit the plans in a format that most of us DIY's don't understand (property setbacks, material, scale, etc...)

The inspector I dealt with is/was an A$$ about it all (long story that is almost at its end) :(

A friend of mine just build a shed 10x10 and he didn't need a permit. HOWEVER... if you pour a cement slab, you have to have one ( I believe)

I think a slab of concrete is considered a foundation, and that is a slew of paperwork and fees unto its own.

Don't take a chance... Just give the city a call, or try and find a local contractor that would be willing to give some advice.

Here's some sites on Oregon permits:

http://www.cbs.state.or.us/external/bcd/

http://www.permitsprotect.info/

http://www.permitplace.com/doineeda/doIneedalist.asp?state='OR'

http://www.contractor-books.com/Oregon_Codes.htm?source=google

H.

I think I might put it on wheels and call it a "trailer". :D I will not spend $150 for a permit for a tiny shed like this...even if I have to spend $150 getting around the permit. :)

Co-rect, Homerr, it's called a low voltage permit. You're supposed to get one when you run a wire for you automatic garage door opener button, also. Yeah, right, sure I will!

And Homerr, you are correct on the ag building. Won't happen within city limits but in the counties you can build the most elaborate, even two story, 'pole barn' you could conceive, all without a permit. The farmers had a lot of pull in the early days, in these NW states.

the permit you're refering to is in conjuction with the electrical permit required to wire the opener itself in a situation such as that.

to translate it for you specificaly ....

ahhhhh **** on it .. I'm not arguing my occupation.

build whatever you damn well please with whatever ya want .. as long as ya do it cheap and ya screw your neighbor in the process ....who gives a rats a**.

Barlow, ya don't need a permit to plug in an appliance that comes out of the box with a standard 110 v grounded power cord.

Re: Building a shed - do I need a permit?

sorry for the shortness on the last post all ....

get a bit crazy about things sometimes ..

Boom ..Pardon, wasn't looking at it that way ,,, if you don't have a box/wire there for the opener (on the ceiling was assumed .. my bad) bouncing power and running rope would -- the low voltage bumb from the opener to the button would be included in that same piece of 'paper' -

"....in conjunction with the electrical permit ..."

sorry //// I'll learn to keep my mouth shut sooner or later.

Re: Building a shed - do I need a permit?

My dad remodels a few homes and apertments a year, he NEVER gets a permet for anything unless building a whole house.

In Somervill, MA we did a 3ed floor unit, everything was done over, electrical, all new windows and new sheet rock. They had to bring a crain in to get the sheet rock threw the window, blocked off the whole street. Not one permet, trip or phone call to city hall. Did whole units like that a few times now and haven't had a prolbem.

City hall fines us when tennets put trash bags out to early, God only knows what a electrical inspection would be like!!!

Re: Building a shed - do I need a permit?

Zmoz,

I went to build a shed 12x18 a few years back. Found out it was cheaper to buy it than to build it. The quality is varied, but I shopped around and found a real 2x4 framed 16"oc structure with pressure treated floor joists and ply floor delivered for hundreds less than my lumber estimate. And they put the doors and windows where I wanted them. It sits on concrete blocks, so it is a "temporary" structure and no permit was needed.
