As the title says, I'm getting ready to build a shop before long. My current boat is 19ft long, plus the stern drive and trailer tongue. I've never actually measured it end to end and its kept at my Dad's in the country. But I'd like to get a bigger/longer boat in the future. Or if I keep reading Opps thread, extend this one, lol. Just kidding, thats insane, :D

I'm curious, what size are most of ya'lls shops? I want one wide enough to keep 2 boats or 1 boat and a car in with room to work and move around the sides. I'd also like one with a loft on one side, kinda a man cave if you will, ;)

Most of the plans I've seen are for a standard roll up door. My Executive has a wakeboard tower on it that is a pain to raise and lower. So I'd like to have a door tall enough to leave it up. Is it possible to modify plans and use a taller door?

Re: Building a Shop

I have a 24x40 garage with a 16' (wide) door that is offset to one side on the 40' side. this way i can have storage in the 24' where the door isnt.
It works out well. Also have 12' walls and 11' (tall) door, just in case.
I also have rafters designed with storage in them and a set of stairs getting to it.
That was the biggest the city would let me put up...:D

As to this, you can get the plans with the standard walls and then build the walls up with concrete blocks. Then put the building on them. This is what I did.
After that all you need is a taller garage door. I think (dont quote me) 16' is the tallest standard door but you can go custom if needed. Really dont know why you would need taller tho. This is a comercial door and will cost...MORE.
Non-comercial 11 or 12 high is the tallest I think.

I'm pretty sure 12 foot would be plenty high enough to clear my tower. Thanks for the reply Bifflefan!

I'm not sure where you looked. Morton buildings has many different plans and will build to your specs as well.

The garage I rent is about 24x 24 and has a 14' tall door offset to one side.
