i have almost finished the rest of the restoration on my chrysler boat and to maximize my storage options i was looking to build some box seats that can act as a storage chest too. if anyone has any photos or tips about making them that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: building box seats for storage

I'm thinking of doing one bench seat in the back of my boat that will be made up of three (two small and one larger) storage areas to hide batteries and the gas tank. Unfortunately, I'm not to that stage yet. I have a picture (I'll post later in my thread) of what I think I want to do.

You can check out my thread (sig) for what I did on mine, I built in box seat bases for storage too!

Hated the old back to backs that were in it.

Basically make your design, glass each piece of wood, fasten it all together, glass it again to cover fasteners, then put it in the boat...

You can make it so it screws down like back to backs do, or glass it in so you dont have extra holes in your deck.

Link is in my signature line. :) just click on it

As for the whole carpet thing, can't help you there, sorry... no carpet in my boat.

I don't think I have ever seen a "carpeted" seat base of any type... most are vinyl over wood if you buy them. Personally I don't like carpet in a boat... if I were you, I would stick to having them built, sealed, then either painted or vinyl'd...

also see this: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread....=back+to+seats

bench across stern, is going to bog you down, getting out of the hole. the biggest, heaviest passenger is going to want to sit there.
remember load balance is 90 % or boat performance.

thanks for the forum url.. ya my plan was to build to small box seats on the sides of the boat maybe about 2-3 feet in length and a foot and a half in width, both will be hinged from the top to open but one will open also from the front so i can store a cooler in there.. then i wanted to put a long one maybe 5 feet in length across the front of the boat where the driver and another passenger would sit.. that one would be broken up into 2 hinged tops.. they would look kind of like a trunk.. i dont want anything blocking my path to the motor or the battery which are both by the transom
