built-in aluminum fuel tank or portable tanks?

I'm re-doing an aluminum '91 SeaNymph 171cc...Removed flooring, foam and stripped bare & clean. Boat has an underdeck aluminum fuel tank, not used by previous owner...he used portable plastic fuel tanks because he felt it was easier for re-fueling. I removed the tank to check it...How do I clean the inside and check it to make sure it's ok to use? It seems in good shape w/ minimal pitting. I'd like to use it to free up deck space and to keep weight lower and more forward.
Or, is there any benefit to using the portable plastic tanks? Any problems to be aware of w/ aluminum tanks?
Thanks, beached

Beachd:

If it was my boat, I would use the built in tank and clear the deck space. I assume you trailer the boat so you can still access cheaper auto fuel.

If you want to use the tank, you could take it to an automotive gas tank shop and have it steam cleaned and checked for leaks. When you reinstall it, make sure you replace the rubber cushioning to ensure that the tank is not rubbing on anything before it is resecured. Check the fuel fill line and vent line. Replace if required and make sure they are double clamped with marine grade stainless clamps.

Mikedg gives good advise...I'd do the same.
However, if the tank has leaks, consider building in one of the various plastic tanks available through Cabela's and the various marine stores. Most of the manufacturers are going to this kind of tank....they last longer, there are no corrosion issues, and no electrolysis concerns.
