I have a 1971 55HP Chrysler. When I pump bulb in fuel line to start, after several pumps it gets semi-hard. If I were to give it another pump or continue to pump, it gets soft and it stays soft while pumping. After starting it is soft all the time no matter how much you pump it. (I am talking about a boat now, not me LOL) Can this be related to it cutting off when I put in forward gear. Is this normal? Thanks

Re: bulb in fuel line

Since you are having the problem before the fuel pump and since you have recently replaced the pump diaphragm, the problem is most likely before the pump. If you are using portable six gallon tanks, check the tank. Some have a screen inside them at the end of the pick-up and this screen can get clogged.

Then, if you have a fuel quick-connect, remove the MALE fitting and check the hole in the backside. Crap from the tank can clog it there, right behind the ball check valve, It (the crud) usually hangs up on the spring.

It is possible that a stalling problem could be related to poor fuel flow and also possible that a low fuel level on the carb bowls due to poor flow can cause lean running. When carbs run lean, the engine speed up some. SO: Yes, it could all be related.

If the bulb won't pump up and stay that way till the motor starts then it probably needs to be replaced. If you have a hose with quick disconects in line then replace with a solid hose with a new bulb.
If you squeeze and it pushes gas out the carb the needle valve is stuck or dirty.J

Primer bulbs also work best when held vertically. Placing them horizontally or outlet-down may prevent them from functioning properly. Once the engine starts and runs for a bit the bulb will go soft since fuel is now being sucked through it so there is no pressure.
