Thank god for friends that know a thing about boats. He founds lots of problems on the boat I was about to buy. The skag on the outdrive had been broken off and re-welded on (is that bad?), and we took out a sample of the lube in the outdrive. lots of particles and stuff in there, some of it was black and some was shiny....... Back to square one..

The right thing will come along. Patience is a virtue. The skeg thing is not a big issue but the outdrive issue sounds expensive.

It sounds like the guy hit something pretty hard with the lower unit. Probably messed up the seals in the sterndrive hence the problem with the oil and why the skeg was welded back on.

Don't worry. Better to know before hand then by it and deal with it later. The right one will come along sooner or later. Hopefully sooner ;)

How did the rest of the boat check out? Sounds like it needs a new lower unit. Price one and make a new offer based on that information.
