Re: Bunk Glide-ons....anyone use them?

I've put them on a number of customer's trailers. They work great with a few notes.

Make sure you wash off any road grit before loading your boat.
Tie the boat down really well and dont release the safety chain or strap until the boat is ready to come off the trailer.
Don't use any screws through the top of the glide-ons. They can come loose and gouge the boat.

Thanks for the input.

Only asking because my bunks are getting ready to get their carpet replaced and stumbled across those glide-ons. Seemed like an interesting alternative to recarpeting or switching to roller bunks.

This is what i was told to. I havent delt with them personal but they seem like they would work great just make sure your boat is tied downed really good.

They work fantastic, but not a substitute for a roller bunk, IMHO.

I have them on 2 jetski trailers, where its really not feasible to replace the carpeted bunks with roller bunks and keel rollers. The boats are so short you have to get your feet wet anyway....LOL.

Roller bunks make the boat slide off by itself. The slides still require you put your back into it and give her a push.

I mounted them with the SS screws provided thru the oem countersunk holes. No problem with screws pulling out after 6 years.

Being sure the boat is tied down, safety strap precautions, yada, yada are not really issues since its only common sense not to release the winch and bow tie down until after the boat is in the water anyway.

I made my own but have used them on a 22ft boat and will never own another boat without them.Back boat in water unhook the strap, let truck roll back an tap brakes an boat slides right off, when its time too load drive boat up trailer an hook up strap before turning off motor. Then with one hand turn crank too bring boat all the way up.NEVER unhook strap till your in the water.I even have them on my 16" bass boat.........

I just ordered a set to replace the rotted bunks that came with the original trailer. For my boat, I dunk the trailer until the the fenders are underwater. By that time, the boat is almost floating anyway so I won't be changing anything in my routine. I use a front wheel drive mini-van so dry wheels and grip are never a problem.

For those that do the "brake tap launch", they need be wary about the boat sliding off the trailer too soon. Keeping the bow tied down until the last possible minute will keep you safe.

That's for 16 feet. It lasts forever; carpet lasts only a few years. When you have to recarpet your bunks it'll cost $40 for 16 feet of carpet.

I have those tie down covers and to me they really dont seem that slippery.

I converted from rollers to bunks, this boat has never sat on carpeted bunks so i cannot compare to that. loading is super smooth and pretty easy to get to the bowstop, but getting it off the trailer something is hanging me up still, as i need to either get wet or bury the trailer.

things to consider

1. these are polyethelene, is uhmw the same or more slippery ?
2. my boat is aluminum full welded so no rivets to hang me up, but is the painted aluminum not slick enough for these to work as intended?
3. my trailer has no keel rollers just stoltz bump pads on the crossmembers and axle, obviously putting some weight on keel rollers would reduce friction on the bunks.

You might try applying silicone spary lubricant on the bunks that you can get from auto parts or hardware stores. It is about 1/3 the price of the lube marketed for bunks.

I added them on top of my carpeted bunks this year. By carefully spacing them you get a good balance of slipperyness without being out of control. They reduce the carpet wear and have made the loading/unloading of my `24 footer much easier.
