Hi Guys,

Trying to help a buddy of mine with his boat, a 1985 Rinker with a MerCruiser 140 . The problem is this :

The Boat ran great when used last, then sat for 2 years. He went to get it in the water this year and it will start and run as normal but the Neg. coil wire that goes to the points immediatly starts to smoke. tried replacing the wire a couple of times but they just keep burning up. He changed out the coil , plugs and plug wires but it has had no effect. I need to know what would cause this condition . Here are a couple of pictures.

Many Thanks,

I don't know what would caus that, but points and condenser are cheap, and everything else is new, so I'd probably put new points in.

Something south of the coil is shorted, probably the condenser.
