Burnt connectors and tach that reads hi

On a recent fishing trip I noticed my tach had stopped working. After checking the tach out all seemed right. When I removed the cover of my 2006 90 hp mercury 2 stroke I noticed two fried yellow wires right at the butt connectors. After cutting out the bad connector and reconnecting with a splice connector my tach started working but seems to read higher RPM’s.
My question is does this indicate a bad voltage regulator or a bad tach? Did the wires fry due to a bad regulator or a poor connection at the butt connector?

Thanks for any insight

It sounds like the rectifier in the voltage regulator is bad. It may show up with a voltage test but the only sure way I know of to tell with that unit is with a digital scope.

Thank you for the response.
Since I do not have access to a digital scope the smart thing to do would be to replace the voltage regulator module.
