I have a 1981 Evinrude 150hp outboard that has a oil leak below the exhaust housing. Where could it be coming from? How can I fix this?

could t be just carbon crud, unburnt fuel mixing and drooling out

if gearcase oil is ok just keep any drains clear and open

Maybe base gasket for the power head I believe mine is leaking. Hard to tell with all the oil over the shaft and everything. So I cleaned it get a better look. I tighten up some of power head bolts to be sure. We’re a little loose. But take the cover off to get a better look

These are bad about powerhead gaskets failing...on use the OEM reinforced gasket

Replace gasket under powerhead.-----Agreed factory gasket is best.

Might check with a dealer and look for a gasket set (powerhead and exhaust housing).

the factory gaskets maybe higher quality.----Especially the gasket between block and exhaust housing.

agree. NAPA would be Sierra gaskets -- but the whole assortment, and that is a cost and convenience advantage. I've had good luck with Sierra products generally, but oem would be preferable. Maybe a shop has a packet -- dusty old NOS package on a back shelf.
