Bushings Worn Out/ What to Do

The bushings have got to be worn out on my old Johnson 60HP. There is a little of "free play" in the motor when it is in the UP position. It will bounce up and down going down the road on a trailor. This makes it very tough on my transom. What can I do to save my transom from getting beat to death? What kind of options do I have?

I'm not super familiar with that motor but you can buy a "transom saver" bracket that attaches to your motor and then to the trailer.

Transom saver. They sell them here on iboats.

I consider them a must, and even have one on my 12' aluminum boat with a 5hp outboard.

Re: Bushings Worn Out/ What to Do

Thanks for the reply. My trailor does not have rolllers in the rear either. Just the frame. I was looking at some of the displays online and they all hooked up to their rollers on the back of the trailor. I found this one at cabelas, but I am a bit confused as to how well it would work...and also since the straight piece is bolted to the frame of the trailor...that wouldn't seem right from launching and loading the boat back on. Seems like another pain in the butt thing to do to get your boat on the water too. Any input?

I have never owned one of these but it does say in the ad that it is "easily removable for loading/unloading"

Most transom savers these days are easily put on/taken off for launching...usually just a minute or two at most. The benefits of a transom saver outweigh the inconvienence 10, 20, 100 fold!!!

The Cabela's transom saver has a pin through it. Pull the pin and its off. the styles that slide over a roller generally come with a bracket that can be bolted to the frame. The piece that slides over the roller is removed and the end of the shaft fits over the bracket bolted to the frame. Its a very simple install. Installation and removal of the device is a one minute operation.

Re: Bushings Worn Out/ What to Do

I ended up spending around 8 bucks at the home depot. I bought this ratchet strap that was more than long enough for what I needed, so I trimmed it a little. It fits the motor up VERY TIGHT when in the locked UP position. It doesnt have any play and should take a ton of stress off the transom cruising to and from the ramp. I'll get some pictures of what I did and post them tomorrow.

Its just one more thing to add to the "to do" list when taking the boat out, but I guess its all worth it.

Haha, No worries. I will get pictures during the daylight tomorrow and post them for all to see. I'm really pleased with how sturdy it makes everything. Such a simple fix.

Well,

If it actually does work like you say it does....then I'm all for it. Hell, $8 bucks versus $40 or $50...that's a no brainer!!!;)
