Alright! Back to the fun. Now that the engine is running pretty much as it should, of course something else goes wrong.

The stainless steel hoses on the port side have rubbed together enough to fray and are now leaking... Quick pics...

Excuse the goofy look on my face as I tried to get a pic from the leak side

How difficult are these to replace? One looks pretty simple as I can see both of the fittings.... The other looks like the fitting is almost behind the ram? Do I just need some crows feet wrenches?

Any tips/tricks for replacement? Or even a walk through would be awesome.

Thanks again guys!

Remove the cylinder to do it. Need to use a line wrench to remove the lines, or since your going to replace, cut the old line and use a boxed end wrench. The one issue which causes me trouble is the bolt (item 9) the holds the forward line against the cylinder. This bolt gets corroded and can break off when trying to remove. Soak it with PB blaster, and if it still won't move, may need a bit of heat, but be careful with heat, not to much

When you get it all back together, maybe use a few sections of heater type hose cut length wise to slip over those stainless steel braided lines and then if they do rub against each other again, who cares. JMHO!

slip epoxy lined heat shrink over the new lines. then hit them with a heat gun. will give you years of abrasion protection.

All fixed on this end, and yes actually very easy to do! Hardest part was getting the ram off of the "arm" or whatever it is called that it is clipped too. Made sure to really grease it up before i put it back on.

Issues i found:

Mercruiser made a different size for each one of the hoses for my year. 1991 Alpha one Gen 2. 14" short hose and 15" short hose. Long hoses where the metal was 11 3/8s and one where it was 11 5/8s.So i ended up buying one of each size, leaving me with an extra short to replace the starboard as well. PB blasted EVERYTHING as soon as i got to the boat and started setting up. But mostly things came apart with ease. Also noticed, whoever installed the last set of hoses used the 11 5/8s when it should have been 11 3/8s, but just bowed them ever so slightly to make them fit. - Jackass.

You CANNOT get a line wrench on the adapter (boat) side of the lines. The fitting is just too close to the hose - a short 3/8 open ended wrench is all that can get in there. So turn carefully.

After the initial threads were started with the new lines l blasted everything with "Heavy Duty Marine Corrosion Preventer" because as i was taking out the old hoses there seemed to be quite a bit of corrosion inside the threads - most of it came out with the threads on the old hoses. But, I wanted a little protection. After everything was tightened up, I sprayed them all again for good measure.

A new problem presented itself. While i was bleeding the system (cycling full up and full down), everything sounds great going up. But screeches from the trim motor when going down until about the bottom 1/8th of travel. I thought it was just air in the line so i kept doing it and doing it. Checking levels and re-filling as necessary. But after about 5-6 rounds of up and down, it wasn't bleeding anymore, just making the noise. Also, as the fluid came out during the repair out it was a bit "Milky". So i'm thinking i got a bit of water sucked into the lines with the leak. Or just old fluid. Is There another way to bleed the system? make sure all that old nasty fluid is out?

Other then taking everything apart, all you can do is drain the reservoir refill and cycle. You can loosen a line and let it leak out, put a rag over them to catch the spray

maybe i'll loosen up one of the short hoses and cycle it until what comes out is the normal color.

thanks

Loosen the lower one when going up, and upper when going down. If you loosen one and it goes in the opposite direction it can suck in air. This isn't a real bad thing because it will bleed back out, just saying

good point.... hmmm

Underway and in the water the noise was far less noticeable. Maybe some standard use will bleed out whats in there (aint broke done fix it?)

I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to have the boat in the water this past weekend and for the first time I had NO SHEEN behind me when i was at anchor or tied to the dock.

I still have some dialing in of the carb to do to cut down on my richness at idle, and i'm thinking a timing adjustment. But mechanically everything is working now.... just in time for a few more weekends of use before it gets put away for the winter  :mad-new:

cheers!
