Busted 3.0 to 2.5 swap

Recently my OMC 3.0 spun a bearing, I found a mercruiser 2.5 down the street for next to free in running condition. Can I make this work to get me on the water while my 3.0 is being rebuilt? Both motors are mid to early 80's
