Yep, I turned the steering wheel so hard on my boat I busted the helm. The motor '84 Evenrude 150hp was stuck (in center position)I could not turn it because it had sat to long 3 1/2 mos. It spent 15 yrs at the beach so the motor will stick after sitting for awhile. My question is... It look's fairly easy to do but is it? It's a 1984 19ft Arrow Glass center console all the fitting's for the cables ect... are in good shape there is little to no rust on the boat, nut's, bolt's ect.. If I have to replace the cables are thay a beast to work with? If I disconect the cables from the motor do I need to keep an eye on anything? If I buy new set up will it hook up and steer straight? If anybody could help me on this THANKS!!! Good day to all.

Re: Busted helm

Disconnect the cable at the helm and turn the
motor manually back and forth whilst observing the diconnected end. Is it moving?
You can pick up a new helm for 46-80 bukz, and use the old cable. Check local marinas for a good used set (cable and helm).
They aren't too hard to pull, but you need the proper tools.
A good wheel puller
diagonal cutters (for tie-wraps)
A drill (if the screw flange is rivetted on)
Socket set
They are not complicated, but when replacing it, take your old cable with you,or measure it.Because they come in different lengths.
Helm gearing is another concern. They come in different steering ratios, like 4:1 ,2:1 ,or direct. (4:1= 4turns of the wheel to full-over motor).
hope this helps ya.
I'm no expert, but I DID sleep at a Holiday Inn last night
