Hi.

I'm thinking about buying a 2005 50hp (J50PLSOC)

Anyone know anything about this engine?

it has been running for about 30-35 hours total.
Anything special i should look for before buying this?

The engine looks great as i can see but im not any good with outboard motors.
Would this be a safe buy?

Thanks

At a good price it sounds like a good candidate. It was a good engine when new.

Consider this: With a successful, on-the-water demo it is worth X bux.

No on-the-water demo, .5X bux provided it has even compression and runs on muffs.

No demo or compression numbers, .25X bux.

Good luck. :)

That motor has been basically unchanged for years. It is simple when compared to the EFI/DFI engines, parts are more reasonable since their are many of these motors around the world, and they are light weight yet have a very stout lower unit for which there are an abundance of props available. It is a very reliable motor. Being a two cylinder, it has a tad more vibration at idle than the competitors three cylinder units. Run clean, fresh fuel and use a fuel system treatment religiously to keep the fuel system clean and it will run for decades.

Hi , thanks for answering

I tried the motor for a test run and it runs great, gonna do a compression test when i get the time. anything else i should worrie about?
Fuel system treatment.. I live in Norway, so we dont have seafoam or something like that.

My local Evinrude/bombardier dealer only sells the 2+4 fuel conditioner, i guess thats what you mean by fuel system treatment. about 20bucks for a small bottle.
What about this, would this do the trick.
Alot cheaper..

Should i decarbonize it before winterizing or should i do that in the spring time before i plunge it back in the water. This engine is only going to be run in saltwater.. The vro system in this engine, is that any good?
Alot of questions... Not easy to be a beginner at this, want to do it right :)

Thanks

Decarbonizing is not an every year requirement. With the low run-time on this engine chances are it doesn't need it. Use of a good quality synthetic or synthetic blend oil will also reduce the need for this process. The VRO system is ok. But learn what the overheat and oil alarm sounds are.
