Went to look at a 1999 225 johnson ocean runner last night guy wants $2200 for it. He took it off his boat approx 6 months ago and stored it in his garage (WRONG) empty carbs and non winterized. We pulled it out last night to fire it up. After a few tries we got it started. Right off the bat i noticed it was not peeing and was getting hot. So we shut it down and took the muffs off and I found chunks of the impellor, so thats shot. so next i did a compression check and found all the cylinders to be mid 80's to low 90's except one which was 120 psi. I found that one cylinder to scare me a little with it being around 40 psi higher than the highest other cylinder. I ched the lower unit oil NO water. tilt and trim worked fine did notice it would need new head gaskets as well as thermostats (alot of salt deposits and water seepage around the head gaskets) motor was faded and would need a paint job as well as new decals. He said the lowest he would go is 1800 but I just felt that was to high with the problems associated with this motor. What do you guys with way more experience than me think?????????

The higher cylinder has most likley been resleeved and the ex relief hole was not put back in.

Performance boaters looking for a cheap gain will typically fill theses holes with epoxy.

Walk away and let the guy soak for a while, call him back and use the percieved deficits to your advantage and cut the asking price in half.

The price is a little high for a "crusty" motor.

Re: SloMC

Me thinks that be a FICHT design. Do a search and read away. If it is what I think it is those engines were/are notoriously unreliable.

Re: SloMC

DO NOT BUY IT. Aside from the obvious probs, this motor has probably been mistreated for awhile. I'm actually surprised that you're actually even considering buying it after looking at it.

Re: SloMC

when a motor has to be rebuilt for the first time worth looking at when it has to be rebuilt for the second time not worth the trouble
