Hey Guys,
My 86 150 Black Max died on me last weekend; not very surprising. I am looking at buying a 200 hp used outboard to replace it, the 150 was a little sluggish getting going. I am not necessarily looking for a Merc, but i have a couple i am looking at. The 2000XL Optimax was completely rebuilt by a reputable shop. It needed a powerhead, but got all new accessories as well. The 97 200XL was rebuilt at the same place. They have given me prices of $8500 for the 2000, and $6500 for the 1997. Both prices are installed, and include a prop and new oil tank, and both have a 1 year warranty from the shop. Apparently the controls will stay the same, but the 2000 requires a new ignition.

Anyone have any advice or other recommendations?
Also, why am i running across so many rebuilt Mercs as opposed to anything else?

Thanks

I would think it probably because merc sells so many more engines than anyone else? There's bound to be more around used. I don't know a lot, but I would go with the non-opti (97).

Do the Optimax engines have problems?

the early optis did(known as opti-bombs) but now the newer ones are great. im not sure on the 2000 year model of optis from a reliabilty stand point though. im not sure if mercury had all the bugs worked out then.
