Guys, seller say compression is about 140psi across all four. I thought these motor has a 150-160 compression. Motor has 365hrs of usage. Price is bit less than 4k for motor. Is this a good deal and should I buy it? Personally, Ebay and credit card has protection if motor doesn't check out like its advertised. I'm just worry about the compression psi. Thanks.

Buying an outboard motor without running it on a sea trial in the river for a couple of hours at all RPM's is just a roll of the dice, pig in a poke, etc....just no way to tell. It may be just fine or it may have issues, and you can't know for sure until you run it. Good Luck!

What does the actual listing say? "About" 140 compression is not a good description. Cyl 1 = xxx, Cyl 2= xxx etc is a valid number. You may have a good power head and a trashed lower unit. Details, details, details. I would have to see the engine run (even running in a video with a verifiable date, and a way to identify the motor) would be a plus. But to buy something that expensive and complex on someones word is real gamble. As is often done in these expensive deals is to se an escrow service. They hold the money until you get the product and verify it is in "as advertised condition". You accept the product and the escro company releases the funds to the seller. You really need to do due diligence on this purchase.

seller just says 140psi across all four. Price seems very good, especially with low hours. I realize risk is high and definitively a gamble. I'll ask him to give me the exact the compression for each cylinder. Seller buys boats from places going out business, then sell engines on Ebay, at least I was told. Motor comes with everything : prop , controls, etc.

Can someone let me know if 140psi sounds right for this year / engine?

Thanks.

I have always thought 4 strokes had a lot higher compression, that sounds like the compression of a 2 stroke.
and a leak down test will tell you a lot more about sealing condition of the cylinders

You are right. I asked him again and he says he gave me the wrong # last time. The compression for this motor is 176 for #1, 175, 175, 175 for the rest. 355hrs. Model F115TXR.

Guys, I think I'll take a gamble and go for it. Seller calls me up and sounds very professional. Only question remains:

Should I ask him him to drain out all fluids ( gearcase and crankshalf ), or leave at least some in? Please let me know so I can direct him. Also any additional suggestions would be helpful before shipping. Engine going to New Hampshire, freezing cold weather already here. Thanks.

I was under the impression all oil had to be removed so that it could not leak anything during transit and cause major hazardous waste clean up problem for the shipping company.
Is it going to be crated up right or laying down?

Make sure it has the motor IDs still intact , you do not want to be buying a hot motor.
Here in Tx motors are titled just like the boats , cars, and trucks not sure about your state

water or moister is what freezing cold will effect, not the oil coated parts.
And there will be some coating left even after draining to protect from rusting of the shiny parts.

My son had a boat given to him by a guy when he stopped to ask about it sitting in a lot,
when he went to get it registered into his name they started to arrest him as it was reported stolen a long time ago. Just saying make sure all you bases are covered.
with the web selling now a days you never know what you are getting as you have not laid your eyes on what you are buying and you do not know who you are buying from.

Know the post is about Yamaha, but. 70HP Suzuki 4 stroke compression spec is 228 psi new. The 140 four stroke is close to 240 psi new. I would also be concerned about water in the crankcase oil, and lower crankshaft seal leaking oil.
