I am buying a new older boat and it has a 89 evanrude 200XP motor on it. Compression is lower 100's on a cold motor and all 6 cylinders are within 1lbs. Anything else I should check out before handing the cash over?

Also are these know to be decent motors of one of those you really should stay away from?

Also check the gear case oil and that all systems are working.

By carb issues what do you mean? Would it not be something that at worst new carbs wouldn't fix? I'm getting a pretty good deal on it as is. He said its cold nature but once it starts it will start on first key bump the rest of the day.

Any carbed engine is quirky when starting. Yours has a special choke solenoid which enrichens the mixture when cranking each new day. Also, has quickstart which advances timing till the engine heats up to 92 degrees-another cold start feature. I'd be more concerned about how it runs at WOT than cold starting. Remember it's not a fuel injected engine. That engine is underrated at 200. As an XP version, it actually puts out about 10% more hp than is on the cowling decal. Those 90 degree big block engines were alway pretty bullet proof.
