Buying a 9.8 Nissan outboard. QUESTION?

I'm planning on purchasing a used 9.9 hp nissan outboard, model # N9.9C around 10 years old. I heard alot of stories about not being able to get parts and no mechanics certified in working on Nissan. Just bad news since every motor would have to eventually be serviced.

The guy selling it says it's flawless, $500 for this thing and I'm putting it on a 12 foot aluminum boat. Any suggestions on this motor? Is it worth it? Should I go with a more common motor like Johnson, evinrude? How many years are left in this thing? I'm tight on ash so I just want to make sure it's going to be worth my investment.

Also is this a short shaft?

If not mistaken, that horse is a not a 9.8 it's 9.9, both are different animals, 9.9 uses throttle linkages, 9.8 uses throtle cable, at least modern models does, search for a engine sticker somewhere....Paul should know parts availability for that 10 year old horse.

As suggested by Sea Rider that look like a 9.9. Post the infomation on the plate next to the shift lever, then Paul or one of the other folks on here can tell you the exact model and what parts may or may not be available.

Per the sellers posting, this is a 9.9. Would it be difficult to get parts or maintain? Im not a mechanic

that is a 9.9... what model is it? look at tag on shifter side of engine. the good thing about these is that you should be able to upgrade to a 15hp for less than $20. i'd say buy it. some parts are hard to find, but there are plenty of donor motors out there, at least where i live. i have two of them and they are tough motors.

Paul, that 9.9 has a bigger CD unit and Ignition Coil is set at different physical position compared to actual 9.9 & 15 D2 models, will both mentioned model parts work electrically ok on that 9.9 ?

Luis, Are you asking whether you can convert a D2 to a C? Why would you do that? Any way, the breaker plate (called the coil plate because there aren't any points) is different between the C and D2. Completely different motors. Some parts might work; YMMV.

Re: Buying a 9.8 Nissan outboard. QUESTION?

Paul,
Was asking if 9.9 & 15 D2 CD, Ignition Coil were compatible with his current C model, now knowing that Coil Plate is different, would still be a good purchase and complete peace of mind knowing that some C principle spare parts might not be available factory stock and that actual D2 models parts "might" work. If you want to throw yourself blindfolded into a pool from a trampoline at night, be shure it has water...

If you can find a "good" 9.9 omc, that is. Most old ones are pretty beat.

Those OMC 9.9 & 15 models have prehistoric thermostats on cylinder head compared to other brands that uses car type, definitely will have a tremendous migrane when you find out while boating that floating algae, junk has been caught by lower tail sealing water intake frying your impeller along with thermo.
