I am a boat newbee and have no clue. Here is what I want to do with it. The family (4 of us) scuba dive. We want to be able to take the boat in the lakes and rivers in florida and do some off shore diving also. What should I be looking at? Looking to spend $5000.00 or less. Thanks
Jim

If its just for diving a pontoon boat boat mat be the way to go.A deck boat would be better ,but I don't think thats in your price range. A large centre con. will also work.... from experience make sure your family brings as little equiptment as possible its amazing how quik a boat fills up with stuff to the point of not being to find anything and not being able to move.

Jim

Would a pontoon boat be able to go offshore? Might be a good idea if it would serve that purpose.

no i would never take a pontoon out of protected water. a deck boat, maybe. a no frills outboard center console should be easy to find where you live.

Would a center console work in both areas I want to use it in? Fresh water lakes and rivers and offshore also? They may be very easy to find here.

I don't think I would want to be in a pontoon in the open ocean. I'm not saying it wouldn't be ok but they are not good in large waves.

Maybe you could consider an iflatable or a rigid inflatable.

Zodiac (as an example)

Otherwise you might have luck with something like a Boston Whaler (again as an example)

It will be hard to stay at $5k with boats like these but it seems you are just looking for ideas as to what would work.

I think you will want a nice open boat that doesn't have big bulking seats and consoles taking up space.

A center console makes sense.

Hi JL, I have dove off numerous boats and there are a couple of considerations you need to make specifically for diving.
First off, you want as much open deck area as possible. It takes a fair bit of room to get dressed to go besides storing equipment.
Second, an inboard/outboard is a better way to go engine wise as it allows you to put a full platform across the back to ease entry and exit into the water.
Third, here in Canada, the weather tends to be on the cooler side and can change very quickly. I have found it nice to have a small cabin to slip into, to get out of the weather. Usually drive boat from here as well. Also good for going over maps and writing dive logs.
Center consoles work, but no protection from weather if needed and not much seating.
You have to take a hard look at where you dive, how often you dive, time of year you dive, etc.
Make a list of what you would like to see in the boat and go shopping for the boat that mostly matches your list.
Since you only have 5K, I would be looking for an older cruiser with a solid hull and good motor, and then modify it yourself.
Good Luck.

I been trailer boating in south Florida for 34 years. My advice is to stay far away from open decks or toons due to your desire to go off shore on occasion. Also the cost of maintaining an inboard/outboard running in salt water can be quite high.

My recommendation would be for a 20-22' outboard powered fiberglass center console (used of course). They can be had for $5K if you are patient. Go to Trader On Line or pick up a copy of South Florida Boat Trader
