i have recently was talk to by a boat expert.he gave me some advice on buying a boat.and what they are worth broken.you are not buying the boat you are buying the motors.i would have paid 14500 for a 25 grady sailfish.the motor had a bad crank and i would have replaced it.i found out that the motor in 1994 johnson was going bankrupt and they didnt produce good motors that year.he also said that there are so many boats out there and you should pick them like fine wine.take your time.dont rush in to anything and dont look so interested.let them call you back.when making an offer, offer what you think its worth and take off another $5000 whats the worst they could say.no!there are 7000 grady whites on the internet.im writing this because i have been doing some research in talking to people ,looking at what they have, and feeling them out ,what would be there best price.dont be sold on the electronic equipment you can purchase that fairly cheap but the motors are expensive.dont over look them.i also learned that one persons word (mint, excellent, flawless, etc)there only words and people need to look them up.just because it says it doesnt mean it is.probly to them it is.broken zippers.cracks in fiberglass, cloudy gauges, broken kleets, not waxed, greasy engine covers(hand prints)stiff steering, rotted floors,i can go on and on.then finding out that some boat are considered a second home which becomes a write off?i hope so!well its time for me to go.i will keep you informed about the deal i make

Plumber'<br /><br />I would agree on all the good advice you give, except about the motor. In 1994, OMC made some very good motors. It was not until 1998-1999 that things started going downhill do to the sale to bomb. and that was mainly with the ficht engines. But the rest of your statements are good advice. Let us know how it turns out...

All advice should be used when the purchase of a new boat is in order.I have learned that you can not do too much research on a subject. The best purchases Ihave made if the boats were of distance from me was a throw away camera with 24 or more exposures.Ask them to take the whole roll not just a few.Have the camera sent back and develop it.Its saved me several trips. The advice on lowballing a seller, just remember you too will be a seller at some point. The recreational toys are always the first to go when hard times it.

i have always looked for a great solid boat with a sick but repairable motor and one that looked "ratty" but was sound. Got some great deals that way and never (yet) got burned.
