Buying a new mattress

It's time for the Admiral and I to get a new mattress, so we're mattress-shopping -- one of my least favorite activities. I imagine we'll be doing the usual visiting of bedding stores and trying to find something we like, but I was wondering if anyone has seen any reliable buying guides for mattresses. I looked a bit on Google, and other than Consumer Reports (which is behind a paywall), all the reviews I found looked more like advertisements than independent reviews. Any suggestions?

We would consider buying online, but that's even more difficult since it pretty much means you're buying blind. We did buy a foam mattress that way for our cabin, but since it's used infrequently, it was not as critical a purchase as if it were our everyday mattress.

I'd also be interested in hearing about the longevity of foam mattresses, and whether they hold up without developing indentations from body weight.

Thanks in advance for any mattress-related advice. (We'll be buying a queen size, if that makes any difference.)

If it were me, Look for those places that will allow you to try it out for 90 days or you can swap it out for a different one. I personally like the sleep number.

x2 go for the king size. We like being able to have different firmness on each side. Mine is #35 wife is #65

Like to find someone which has had the sleep number for at least 10 years. Has the number increased/decreased and how is sleep?

We get a firm high quality pillow top "marriott" type and have been satisfied

My sleep number is 10+ years old. I slept great in it, Wife wanted a new mattress so we bought a sealy this time. The sleep number is in our guest room. Never had any issues with it leaking, it has been moved from state to state twice. The only reason we didnt buy a second sleep number was the price for what we wanted. The Admiral wanted a king with the heat and cool. Very pricey. We bought the sealy with a cooling pad.
