buying first boat - PICS added

I got into fishing a couple years ago and am now buying a boat because rental rates and hours suck! I have an opportunity to purchase a boat from a friends dad. Nice, old retired guy, takes good care of his stuff but I know nothing about boats so does this sound like a decent deal. I tired to NADA it but that didn't work.

Details: 1994 16' Sea Nymph w/ 2-cycle 25hp Evinrude and 50lb thrust evinrude trolling motor, 6 gallon tank, custom cover, Haul-right trailer with new tires and wheel bearings, live-well, stick steer with electronic tilt/trim, 2-12v batteries (1 brand new deep cycle), Laurence fish finder, carpet though-out. Both motors were gone though and freshened up last fall, always stored inside. I have not seen the boat in person but I have in pics. Apparently this guy is ridiculously anal about his stuff and I am told the boat is immaculate with no issues...ready to hit the water tomorrow. I do not know the model number off hand but it's a "deeper boat" according to the guy but it does not look like an actual deep-v from the pics.

Obviously I will go look at it before I buy it but is there anything else I should look for and should I ask to go for a ride? Like I said, I trust the friend and his dad seems like a hell of a nice guy who just wants to move this boat because a good deal on something bigger came along. He is asking $3k but since I am a friend of his sons he would be willing to come down a bit...maybe $2500.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

You might try in the manufacturer specific section.
Try www.boattrader.com to see what other boats of the same make / year are selling for nationwide.

NADA isn't great for boat values.

Re: buying first boat

Sounds like a decent deal if it's as nice as you claim.
For comparison, last year I got a 14' Lowe "Big Jon" (1995) setup with a home-made console and 25HP Evinrude (1985). It has wheel steering and remote shifter but no electric tilt/trim and no trolling motor. It included an ancient but useable trailer and I negotiated the package for $1200 plus a kayak I wanted to sell (worth about $600), so my net cost was $1800. I thought it was a good deal.

Try craigslist.org in your area. At this time, you can find a lot good deals because of housing foreclosures.

Someone bought my 14' 1992 grumman with 15 HP Johnson for $2550 and he seemed happy paying it. Sounds like a good price to me.

2500 even sounds steep to me, with only a 25hp. on a 16 foot boat.

I guess it all depends on where you live. The type of rig you described in excellent condition in my neck of the woods would go for $4000 and up. I watch with great envy many of the deals I see on boats in the southern US. To me it seems like people are virtually giving them away.

the midwest seems like they are giving the away to me. if the economy does not improve, there are going to be a lot of regions, giving them away. take over payments.

Re: buying first boat

really wow! I live in Iowa and all the boats I see in the $3k range are beat to crap, have rusted out trailers and ripped seats. This thing looks like it just came of the showroom floor and has a ton of extras so I thought was a good deal for nice first boat?

thanks for the info fellas

Wow! That is one sweet boat. I just bought my boys a 1976 15ft Champion with a 65hp Johnson for $600 at the end of last season and it has had a "well used" life.

bought it! I got it for 2700 including two anchors (one crank, one toss), ores, 3 life jackets, an extra seat to mount, electric beilge pump and bunch of other little things.

I am happy with it based on what I have been seeing around the for sale sections. My mouth is watering for spring - Crappie here i come!!!

Re: buying first boat - PICS added

I bought my first boat last season, it is a 17 ft v-bottom Sea Nymph FM170. I can tell you Sea Nymph's are built tough. Lowe bought the company in the late 90's, and they make great boats too. The bottom of the hull on mine looks like a Sherman tank. I think you'll be very happy with your purchase because it is worth a lot to buy a bot from a known source, especially if that source is known for being anal about the boat. The trailer looks like it's in good condition too, which is nice. I'm dreading the day I have a breakdown on the way to the lake. Take care of the boat and the motor, and they will take care of you. That will be an excellent crappie rig. Tight lines.
