buying new from dealer

It's been many years since I bought a new boat, but I'm headed in that direction pretty soon. In the current market, can I expect a dealer to actually "deal" on the "sticker price" or is pretty much "what you see is what you pay" on new boats? My first boat purchase (new) was an '85 Bayliner which served us well for many more years than I had expected it would - so I'll probably start there. What can I expect from the dealer?

some dealers have old stock still sitting, and are anxious to get rid of them. some are greedy and want to recoup the interest they have been paying of their floor plan. you just have to play them by ear. they new Bayliners are much improved over the '85. but they are all inboard/outboards, as Mercury, does not have a viable outboard for them.

Re: buying new from dealer

Bought my new Maxum from a dealer 2 years ago. It was a leftover from the prior year. After the dealer ran the numbers we told him we would think about it. About a week later, my wife, without me knowing, goes to look at the boat and winds up talking to the salesman again. She then low balls him and he tells her he has to check with the owner of the dealership. She comes home and tells me what happened. A few hours later we get an e mail that they accepted the offer.

The long and short of it, try for the best deal you can get.

Oh yeah, he threw in a free slip in his marina for one season.

Many thanks for the perspectives on buying new from dealer and the new Bayliners v older. Love the anecdote from the guy whose wife essentially "made the deal-bought the boat" - would you please introduce your wife to my wife! :)

My wife also does all haggling when purchasing cars. I'm not a fan of the whole process. When our Impala started getting unreliable I told her that if should find a way to turn the Impala into a Honda with a payment we could afford she could go ahead and do it. She did all the legwork and phone work with 3 different dealers and got us a good price. I was allowed to pick the color. I picked white. She bought a blue one.
