Im looking to buy a small used 14ft boat for my kids with a 2 stroke 15hp Yamaha. What should I look for when checking out the motor?
It can be run on a hose or in a barrel, but I can't test it on the water.

How do I spot gearcase slack or trouble? engine wear, charging, carburetter problems.

Any advice is appreciated.

You really need to run it on the boat and in the river/water...clod starting, idling, mid-range, throttle response, wide open throttle. If it is a saltwater motor then double check everything....preventive maintenance records, etc.

Agree with everything here ^^^^. If it's absolutely not possible to test motor under load, you'll then just have to weigh the risk-reward of buying the engine without testing under load. Of course the risk-reward is directly proportional to the amount of money you intend to lay out for the motor. The more expensive, the more risk. Quite honestly, you should never buy an outboard without first testing under load, unless the price is so low that you'd break even when parting the engine out if it fails under load.
