Hello, I am new to iboats and am in need of some basic advice, I think. I just purchased a 14' boat and johnson 40hp 1885 motor, I believe it says 'Sea Nymph' on the front of the cover. I started it up on a lake this past weekend and it ran fine for about 5 minutes and then a buzzer started from the console. Constant loud sounding buzzer. I started back to shore but before I got back it stopped and stayed off until I restarted the motor. I went for about 10 trips that day. Basically every time I restarted the motor the buzzer would go on after about 5 minutes into the trip and then go off after about 3 minutes of annoying buzzing. I noticed that the buzzer is most likely caused by overheating, according to some threads here. However, why would my buzzer go back off after a few minutes? If I didn't turn the engine off between trips, i.e. just idled close to shore, the buzzer would not come back on. The pee stream was warm, not hot and went out about 1 footfrom the housing when idling. The motor ran and idled nicely for all my trips out. I took off the top housing and the large center rotating gear (sorry don't know the correct term for it) was hot to the touch, as was the housing of the starter. The outside of the motor was not hot at any point. No smoke either. The buzzer didn't appear to be speed related, however, the one time I went out by myself it didn't buzz at all, so perhaps it has to do with how the motor sits in the water. I am no expert on outboard motors, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post.
