buzzer going off

I have twin 1986 Evinrude 175XPs with the VRO disconnected. Today, after idling for 10-15 minutes at the ramp and through a no-wake zone, a buzzer started going off as I increased throttle. It was a constant buzzing, not intermittant, and only stopped when I turned off the key. It started back instantly if I turned the key on, even without firing the engine. I did try firing the engine back up and it ran smoothly and responded well, but I couldn't get rid of the buzzer so I limped back on one engine. The water temp gauge was fine and I don't think it was overheating. Could I have reconnected a VRO alarm or maybe popped a ground free somewhere causing the alarm? I just replaced the battery cables and starter on that engine. The buzzer has not gone off in the past.

Re: buzzer going off

Jax....the steady tone means either overheat or restricted or no fuel flow. If yer sure the engine temp is good, squeeze the primer bulb and see if that clears the alarm. If it does, look for a lose fuel line or pinched line.

You can also try and disconnect all alarm inputs to the horn at the engine and see if any one clears the alarm tone. If it don't, the horn module is bad.

My gut feeling is the alarm horn module has gone south.

Re: buzzer going off

Thanks for the ideas. I may be wrong about the overheating. Once the alarm went off I really didn't leave the motor running long enough to thoroughly check all possibilities. I have electric fuel pumps with no primer bulbs and the engine fired and idled well. I have noticed water leaking out of just about every spot on the lower unit and don't know enough about the engine to know what is normal. It has been a while since the impeller was replaced and the last time I went out I got beached and sucked a lot of mud into the intake. It has run since then but I can't confirm it is all cleared out. I am going to have a mechanic look at it this week and check out the water pump and thermostats. I am going to trade the boat in on a new center console in the next couple of months and need it fixed quickly and correctly.
