I was getting a buzzing from my control box the last time I was out untill I switched it to neutral. Is that the overheat alarm? I just put the control box in and wasn't sure if thats where the alarm is, is there a temp gauge in there.

I have a 1990 v-200 2.4L Merc. My understanding was the alarm is either a add on under the dash or someone told me that the motor has a built in alarm but I dont know where that would be, or if you could hear it if it was in the motor. Why would the control box be buzzing. thx for any help

Re: Buzzing from the control box

this post may need to be moved to the merc section as they are the experts. From my understanding a warning horn was a option on the mercs and used the tan/blue wire. I also thought that the audio buzzer was not installed in the shifter but was installed under the dash.
Shifting in to neutral should not silence the alarm as its based on temp or oil pressure unless you was at very low rpm and when you shifted to neutral the rpm came up a 100 or so thus increasing the oil pressure enough to open the the switch. Check the oil level on the motor. hopefully a mod will find this post and move it for you as the merc forum will be able to give you better advice

Re: Buzzing from the control box

ok thx guess I should prob start it again in the merc section. I thought this might of been an easy answer, but everything you said makes sense to me. I think it was the tan/blue wire and it had a horn under the dash that was broken when I got the boat, I never installed another. Wonder what that buzzing is in the control box. Someone told me that there was a temp alarm in the motor but I dont know where that would be and how could you here it. so thx ill move it or start it over.

To test the alarm, take the cover off the engine and locate the overheat warning switch. It will be in one of the cylinder heads, and have a tan/blue wire on it. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and ground that tan/blue wire. You should now here the warning buzzer.... Is that the same as you are getting?

Ill try that but from memory I know the heat temp wire that goes to my gauge that is below the #2 cylinder looks to be only a wire and doesnt have any buzzer attached to it. Also I would not hear the buzzer untill I slowed down and then It was definitely coming from the control box because I put my right ear down to it and it got louder :watermelon:...Ill check to see if I can find the warning switch but I think its just a wire going straight to the gauge, it was a tan wire

The buzzer should be inside the control box... The temperature gauge sensor and the alarm switch are 2 different items.... The buzzer wire is tan/blue....

Re: Buzzing from the control box

alright Ill test that wire and see if the buzzer goes of, either way that sucks I must be overheating. Ya now that you mention it I think there is one wire below #2 cylinder and a round sensor wire below #1 maybe #1 is the tan/blue going to the control box, ill take a look tomorrow and test it. thx Achris
