acc

Don't know about the suggestions part, but if you are going to disable it, here goes:
First, Remove the oil line from the tank to the engine and plug the nipple with a Vacuum cap and zip tie to hold it.(Auto Parts store).
Find the wiring harness that comes off the back of the VRO. The wires run to a round black rubber plug about 2" long & 3/4" in diameter. remove the spring-clip from it and un-plug it and tape it up. Next, find the 2 wires that run from the oil tank to the motor. Find the connectors and unplug them, pull the wires out of the cowl and remove the oil tank from the boat. Mix fuel in the tank 50:1 Mix and pump up the bulb to get it into the carbs, as they will have straight gas in them until the pre-mix reaches the carb. That's it.

Not at all, Curtis. I did!! Just thought you might be asking whether to disconnect or not. I'm an advocate of removal.

Re: Bypass VRO????----more----

I made it my top priority on my new motor. Blew the last one as oil pump failed and my alarm never sounded. Expensive lesson..

Murray-

OK. I took a look at the thing and 'simulated' the task.....

Do I remove the oil hose at the spot where it enters the engine housing???

Are all of the wiring changes simply to disable the alarm(s)?????

I looked and never saw a wire coming out of the thing....I'm sure I was looking at the VRO... 'took it to a friend....he can't find wires either....

Question???? Why not add oil to the main fuel tank at 50:1 and run the engine for a few minutes at 'double oiling'....then remove the oil hose....then figure out how to stop the alarms????

thanks for the advice and patience....

curtis

acc,

First off, don't know why you're disabling it.

But, there is no reason to "double oil" the fuel in the tank-50:1 is all it requires.

The "oil pump" has two or three wires coming off of it. It should be easy to idenfify. It's black, circular and has fuel/oil lines going to it.

Yes, you need to cap (SECURELY) the oil inlet at the engine cowl entrance.

Re: Bypass VRO????----more----

acc,Your Vro pump has a small harness lead coming from the housing that leads to an amphenol plug.Your remote oil tank has a two wire lead that routes to the engine compartment as well. These need to be disconnected in order to disable alarm circuit while operating with the VRO as a conventional fuel mix pump or the alarms will be sounding.
Mix 50:1 in your fuel tank and depress(with a small nail or similar tool)the ball valve on the end of the fuel line that enters lower engine pan and purge into a clear container until you can verify(by color) that the premix has reached this point.Connect fuel line.

I removed the VRO oil line at the first fitting before the pump and used a stainless bolt shank of proper size and a hose clamp to secure. This will prevent the pump from sucking air.If you remove the tank from the boat as well, you'll want to cap off the external oil fitting that is attached to engine pan to keep contaminants out in the event that VRO is restored to service.

You'll want to locate the tan wire that leads from the temp sensor once the VRO alarm leads are disconnected to perform a simulated overheat alarm test. With key in the on position(engine not running)ground this wire to the block by slipping its insulated jacket back and verify that overtemp alarm operates when wire is touched to ground.

Here's a view of your VRO pump.# 3 is the wire harness that you need to locate and disconnect. The amphenol plug in the picture does not necessarily denote that it is as close to the pump as it appears in this drawing.93' 40 hp VRO pump.

Re: Bypass VRO????----more----

hey Rick, I followed your instructions also. It was all pretty straight forward except for the VRO wires. mine is a 93 evinrude 60hp and the wires are on the inside, not the rear. They are the only wires that could possibly be from the vro But???? Any color code so I know I  got the right connector?

Dunk....

I'm not Rick and am a bit color blind but the colors of the four wires from the VRO in my service book for a 93 40hp Evinrude are tan, black, maybe purple or blue and the fourth one appears grey.....

hope this helps....I haven't done the VRO surgery yet....I took it out fishing today and it ran so well that I'm scared to point a wrench at it....
