I have a merc 165 I/O and the volvo penta interior belt driven raw water pump makes so much sense, especially for maintainance, Is it possible or would it destroy the outdrive ???

Stick with the pump in the drive. Change the impeller every other year during winterization. Don't make a frankenstine out of it. The drive impeller has worked on your engine and many others for a lot of years.

Auuuuggggh !!! no more impellars !!!!! at least they are inside the boat and I can leave it in the water when I can do the work ! at least being in the water at the dock is acceptable to me, not in dry dock in my back yard !:p
