Hello all. Im trying to get ready for summer and could use some help. Ok, the boat and motor situation:
1991 Bayliner Capri
Installed a 1981/1982 Mercruiser 140Hp Ser. # 6018808 (in this 1991 boat)
REMOVED original motor (1991 Mercruiser 3.0L Ser. 0D619732)
BUT, kept Wiring harness and EST ignition original to boat/motor.
I had the motor running with the est ignition on a pallet by making a jumper on the harness connector before I dropped it in the boat. I also remember that I had it running after I originally dropped it in but not for long. been a few months...
I cannot get the motor to start anymore? Cranks fine, but I have no spark from the coil to the center post of the est distributor or to any of the plugs. Neutral safety is hooked up and working correctly in the controls. (wont crank if out of neutral). the shift interrupt switch located on the valve cover(swapped from original motor to the older one I dropped in) is bypassed white/grn. to Purple.
My question is this: I was reading some posts on the subject of bypassing the wire with a resistor in it to get enough power to the coil. I planned on doing all of the recommended est components tests, but i Know that it was running before with this ignition and now its not starting and has no spark while cranking? ... Ive read the manuals and threads, but im still not really sure where to start. What could I have changed or done to make this happen. Not sure if I switched any thing around because its been a while. I had it running in the boat and then I was messing around swapping the electric choke over from the blown motor etc... Everything seems to be wired correctly; I double checked the spark plug wires position etc. Im not absolutely sure that i have the alternator and/or starter wired correctly. Is the fuse or breaker thing on the large positive terminal of the starter absolutely necessary?
Is it possible that the problem is that i am running the newer EST ignition with the older style Starter motor? I will include some pictures
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt
