Re: c-map pc planer thoughts

I have a garmin also and I entend to replace my small navman 4500 (used for the fuel monitoring mostly) with either the navman 6600 or the new 8120. I may end up removing the garim gps and sitex bottom machine and navman 4500 after that. Meantime I've been studying the c-map and planer program because that's what the navman uses. From what I've learned, just buy the c-map cartridge for the area that you want and plug it in to the Navman. If you want to plan routes, store past routes or waypoints or enter waypoints from the comfort of home, the c-map planer could be nice. C-map has a lot of information on their website about the pc program. They are still as protective of their electronic charts as far as copying them as Garmin is with bluechart. You can buy a blank cartridge and write the charts that you want to it, but you first have to buy the chart from c-map so I have yet to find much advantage of the pc planar other than doing some of the work with waypoints or routes in the comfort of home.
I have also learned that I cannot transfer my 500+ waypoints from my garmin to the navman due to both companies having proprietary pc programs. I got that information direct from a
c-map rep. Looks like the garmin stays onboard untill I can visit most fishing reefs and one touch enter them into the navman gps.
By the way, as long as you have the bluechart cd and code#, the info can always be reloaded to that same gps (or a second gps) for free. An updated bluechart cd costs about half what a new one costs as long as you have a valid bluechart cd. I've reinstalled my blue chart several times for free even though the data is a couple years old. Once my pc crashed and was reformatted. I lost all of my waypoints and bluechart info. I simply uploaded the old data from my garmin unit back to my pc.

The nav man uses c-map chips, you do not need to use the PC-Planner to load the chip into the Navman unit.

What the PC-Planner does is allows you to use your chip at home on your PC for trip planning. The PC-Planner also allows you to transfer waypoints, routes, and trips from you Navman, to your PC and back. You can setup routes and waypoints on your PC and load them to the Navman.

I use PC Planner to setup trips, before I make a new run, becareful as it is not 100% accurate. It is enough to get you where you are going, but can be off enough to put you out of the channel in some areas. (I boat in the Delaware river and the St Lawrence Seaway)

Also if you are setting up your route, do not use the bouys on the chart for your waypoints, because if you do, it will be the one time the GPS and the chart match 100% you may not like the results.
