I remember JB mentioning this huge bird in a recent post. Kinda puts in perspective when you consider that it's a KC-135 (Boeing 707) refueling him. They say the "bow wake" (this is a boating forum after all) is enough that the pilot flying the KC-135 has his hands full with the galaxy behind and below trying to push his aircraft up and forward.

Yeah, only in reverse. The KC-5 has to constantly deccelarate and drop altitude.

He really is trying hard to keep his backside level!

They have one of those at the Houston air show every year. Just an amazing aircraft.

Ken

Would the smaller one be a KC-135 Stratotanker? What's a K-5?

Re: C5A Galaxy

It's a KC-135A or E (can't tell from the pic). The C-5 indeed has a bow "push" that will cause trouble for the tanker driver if the C-5 doesn't move slow and easy. The tanker elevator "trim" system relieves the additional control loading as the C-5 moves in and out. It's really peotry in motion when done correctly; a mightmare when done otherwise. And no, the tanker doesn't have to descend while refueling a C-5.

KC-135...sorry...dumb thumbs at the keyboard again  I wonder if the KC-10 (boeing DC-10) has the same tendencies?

I've logged alot of hrs in the C5.......playing football w/ my buddies. :) My father was the chief test pilot at Wright Pat in the 70's. Quite the beast.

I was moved around by one in 1978 with 1 D7 bulldozer, Cat 120 Road Grader and a Case 24B frontend loader inside. We got to sit "upstairs" it was a nice experience. We dove in and straight out when we landed. At the time none of us realized that the nose opened up.

I remember the first time I saw a C-5 flying...the thing looks so much like a C-141 that I thought I was looking at a C-141 about to fall outa the sky the first time I saw a C-5 taking off. Spooky!
