I have the old type two lever controls on my 1963 18hp Evinrude,I have recently purchased a 1998 25hp Johnson with the cables and control box attached.
I intend to change the outboards over. The controls on the Johnson are operated by a single lever,I don't quite understand how the single lever operates.
The control is manual,no electrics attached. The engine is a pull start with no starter motor or ignition. There are no buttons on the control box,it just moves backwards and forwards.
The lever will pull inwards,(out from the box) about 1/4",which seems to disconnect it.
Can anyone explain the working principals of the lever?
Before I make the changeover it would be handy to know so I know what I am aiming at.
I think I will probably need to adjust the control box position as it is very close to the driving seat.(Swivelling large seat)

when you pull the lever out the 1/4", that disconnects shifting and is "throttle only"

other than that, the lever in the middle is neutral, as you move it forward, it puts the motor in forward, and the farther you push, the more throttle you get. same with pulling it back for reverse

Yep, pull it out and move it forward a bit to give it some throttle for starting without being in gear. Once it is running, pull it back to neutral position and push it back in. Now both throttle and gearshift are operational and you go for a ride.
