Cable pulley system?

I have a 14/42 Jon boat with a 1974 25hp Johnson. I am trying to add remote steering. A pulley system seems to be the only option for this motor. A lot of the parts for this system I feel I could just get from Lowe’s. Am I correct? Or do I need to be hunting for specific parts?

Transom mount steering tube will take place of the tilt tube. The cable drum will work but I bet you don’t have space for it

have you got a helm for the pully system , the last one i bought was expensive.
cables and stainless parts are also not cheap items over the counter.

No helm. I have yet to buy any parts yet. I am building from scratch as cheap as possible.

Unless you’re salvaging an old cable drum system, a new wheel and drum is going to cost $150 alone. Glen L sells them still but they are very much a specialty item. The way they work is a little more than a pulley. It’s almost threaded if you will

I was planning to go to my local salvage yard and have a look. A push pull system may be simpler and cheaper.

Ok, then go for it. I used an old rolling pin for a drum and a large v-belt pulley for the wheel. The rest is at the local hardware store or salvage...

One other little Tidbit, while the Cable for the Pulley System, looks like Clothesline, it is NOT!

There are those that use clothsline, but it doesnt work well at all....steel cable covered in a heavy vinyl coverung is what is needed...springs to keep tension. In my younger days back in the 60's I rebuilt a few of them. They work well if setup properly, but if they are not...they are horrible. Check local marine salvage yards if you have any, often a complete system is cheap, if you remove it...
