Cable vs. Strap Wench

I need to replace my wench on my trailer.
I have a '99 Sea Ray 190 Bow Rider, 3,000 lbs. dry weight, add another 600 lbs for fuel, ect. for a 3,600 lbs total.
EZ Loader trailer, with bunks, not rollers.
Used primarily in fresh water, but occasionally put it in salt.
Currently have a cable type wench that is starting to fray a bit, and the locking mechanism is starting to go, so I want to replace the whole thing.
My question is should I go with a strap type wench, or a cable. I like the idea of a strap, but I am not sure about the pro's and con's of each.
Also, what is the minimum load rating I am looking for? Is it the total weight of the boat = fuel/accessories? less? more? Since the cost difference is not much, I am planning on buying one with A LOT more load rating than required, but am not sure of the "base number".
Any first hand experience or recommendations?
Thanks,
Erik

straps do get wedged in the winch, i will never have another cable. you need a winch rated for atleast the weight of the boat. it is not picking it up, but sliding it on wet bunks. but if you ever hit a bad ramp, you will be glad you had it. also a 2 speed winch comes in handy.

I agree. Strap winch is the only way to go.

As for wenches, it's always nice to have a nubile wench or two aboard.

I'm new to boating as of last year and my first trailer had a cable winch. I replaced the cable with a new one.

Sold that boat this summer boat a new one with a strap.

For what its worth, I'll never winch a boat with a cable again. Straps are definitely the way to go.

I have always had cable and have no problem with them, however I will most likely go with a strap next time. Will let you know my proper opinion when I have experienced both.

1. A young woman or girl, especially a peasant girl.

I misread that at first and thought it said pleasant girl. Where the heck are you going to find one of those??

I replaced the cable on my old boat with a strap because the cable was getting rusty and frayed. I would rather have the strap break than be standing there winching boat and have the cable snap.

I prefer the strapping Wenches,,, Er!,,, :D I mean a winch with a strap, after having both, the cable tends to fray, & get annoying kink memory.
Wait, I actually prefer Kinky Wenches most of all myself ;) :D
