Just discovered this, simple fix. Drove a skiff this time last year. Workers would bring me 15 gallons of gas in the morning. The cans were the new california style with black spout and no vent. Not just a pain for me but everyone else is complaining as they gas up the boats, took a long time. Took it in stride and made sure i got the old style cans when i needed my own.
Started back driving for awhile and surprise the cans now pour like they should. Someone had drilled holes where you would normally have the vent and screwed in sheet metal screws that could easily twist out. Why didnt I think of that? Eventually would have had they been my cans. If you are putting up with those cans, give it a shot. Big improvement regards fred.

Not a bad idea, but I went a step further.

First I cut the end of the nozzle off, so you don't have you push it down to get it open and removed their tiny plastic vent hose.

Then I drilled a hole at the other end of the top of the tank and installed a metal valve stem off an old truck wheel, after removing the needle valve, of course. The valve stem came with a metal cap.

Now it pours gas as fast as the pump. You can actually hear the dollar$ going into the tank.

The biggest problem I have seen with the new style of gas can spout (fwiw, they will become required in every state soon) is folks don’t know how to use them. There is a spring-loaded tab on the top of the spout that allows you to insert the spout into the tank without spilling gas. Then depress the tab on the tank’s fill tube lip and the spout opens right up so the gas can flow out and air can vent in. If the spout slips out of the tank while filling, the flow of gas immediately stops. Not a bad thing. Might be helpful to read the instructions…or for the illegal immigrants that don’t speak/read english, just look at the pictures, it’s not rocket science.

Tampering with the spout or venting the gas can could get you fined here, tho I have never heard of it happening. I hated the new spouts, until I took a look at the instructions.

Are these the so-called ventless gas cans sold across the nation? Where the vent come up the spout and they have the yellow caps that cap the spout/vent combo? Mine is that way, but doesn't seem like anything is spring loaded. You have to pour at a slower rate to allow the vent to receive air.

Yes , I believe they originally had yellow plastic caps. Noticed there was a hook type gizmo at the end of the spout but never paid that much attention. Is just before sun up, no-see-ums are feocious and just want to gas up the boat. Beautiful time of the day with the dolphins putting on a show and I get paid for it. Great bunch of guys, roofers from mexico/guatalama. Illegal who knows? Dont smoke, drink,do drugs, have an attitude. Work like DOGS, I could not do it if i were young again. If you are in california, beware of the gas can police! Whats next? regards fred

I'll remember not to take my "home" vented cans to the Bay Area...for fear of encountering the dreaded gas can police. :)

Re: california gas can fix

The problem I have with those new style gas cans is that the spout doesn't go in far enough for me to fill the boat. Trying to press the spring spout on the outside of the fill hole where the gas goes in is next to impossible. To fix that I pulled the spout all the way back with my hand.Next take a screw and screw it into the inner part of the spout(as far back as you can).Next let go of the outer part and you will see that the screw holds it back. Now you can use it without having to press the spout up against the fill hole for it to work.
