California Property Tax for Boats?

So, I just got in the mail a bill for property tax I have to pay because I live in California and own a boat. This state taxes boats as property like a house. I am speachless. So, I have to pay taxes and fees when I register it, I have to buy permits to use it on any lake, and now also have to pay property tax on it? This is amazing. Now I understand why so many people register there boats outside this state. How can a boat be taxed like my house?

South Carolina does the same thing....boats, cars, motorcycles......have to pay property tax on all that. Sure makes me miss Florida with no state income tax and no property tax.

So they say here in SC, "well, remember that you only have to pay a maximum or $300 sales tax on your car, boat,etc. when you buy something no matter what the cost." This is true...and not a bad thing....but....you pay the damned property tax for the rest of your life as long as you keep the thing.

Welcome to the Social State of California. Someone's go to pay for the 2 million State employees.

I went on a cruise last year and met a recently retiring school teacher. Her retirement pension was $105K per year--up from only $101K when she was working. Duhhh! In other states, they'd get two teachers for the same amount--and they'd be glad to have the jobs.

I bought a used car online from a new car dealer in California last year and had it shipped directly out of state. There was a minor title problem, and the California DMV demanded a 9% sales tax before issuing the replacement title. I had to read California law online, and petition the Board of Equalization to get a sales tax waiver.

Now we understand why Arizona, Oregon and Texas are receiving waves and waves of California citizens--escaping taxation and high cost of living.

I'll second that!!!!

Bought a 12' tinny in '76 for fifty bucks...gave it away in '06 after paying an average of $5 a year for thirty years !!!! Go figger.
