Can any of you guys that have the Force 125hp Motors with the Blue coils tell me what Plugs you are running. I also want to know what your RPMS are and what your timing is set to?

I currently reset my timing to 30 degrees and now have lost power and it seems to have excess gas running out of the exhaust. when I checked it before i set it, this is about what it was set to, maybe like 28-29, I think, not sure.

Just trying to see what everyone else is running. I am also running NGK BUHW Spark Plugs.

Thanks,
Bryan

timing 30, I have read online that you get better performance by retarding to 28 but don't know for fact.

I have champions in mine, not sure what number, I am rebuilding my motor so I have everything boxed up and labeled, I will check tonight. don't have tach yet so not sure on rpm..

compression check ok? my #3 was bad, blown piston

Re: Calling all Force 125 Owners

Alright, I just got done doing this. I set my timing to 28 BTDC while cranking. I noticed the motor runs alot better than it had. When I checked the timing before I started it was between 29-30. It wasn't a huge difference, but a noticible one. I believe I used QL76V
spark plugs. Got them from Kragen for like $2.50 a piece. I'm still new to boating, and I keep forgetting to see what pitch prop I have on the o/b, but I got up to around 4300 RPM and top speed of about 42 MPH all trimmed out on a Bayliner Capri 17.5'

The book says 28 btdc for the prestolite ignition (blue coils).

Re: Calling all Force 125 Owners

Roscoe,
I have the Clymers manual and it states 28 degrees, but then has a star and sayd that if you have the Prestolite ignition, blue coils?, to set it to 30.

This is what I had done, now I seem to have alot of unburned fuel since doing this.

I will redo the timing to 28 and see how she runs. I had it all running great, till I messed with the Timing the last time, now it seems like something is holding it back.

Thats why I was wondering.

I used to beable to get up to 43-44mph on a 19 foot bayliner. Running about 5k RPMS. Before I messed with the timing I was able to get up to 41-42 at about 4300-4400 rpms. Then I messed with the timing, now I can barely get up to 4000rpms and 32-33 mph.

I will redo the timing then and see how she runs. It also takes longet for it to start up now.

Thanks,
Bryan

Clymer manual chart page 164.
I read this chart as saying you should read footnote #1.
Footnote #1, prestolite ign, 28* btdc

Re: Calling all Force 125 Owners

Roscoe,
Thanks. This is a pain in the butt, for me, lol. I keep missing something.

I will set it to 28 and see if she will scream again.

Would this leave Unburned fuel coming out the exhaust ports? I have got alot of this now, where as before I never had this.

Also what would it run like if I have it set at 30 instead of 28? What I am currently getting, low RPM's at WOT, and a loss of top end speed, hard starting at times?

Since you know alot more than I do. I trust what you tell people in the forums and have used alot of your information in the past.

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Calling all Force 125 Owners

Ok, Roscoe. You are totally Correct. I don't think I was drinking anything the night I just did the timing, but Damn if my manual does not say 28 degrees also, plain and simple. I was blind that night, obviously.

Thanks for waking me up and making me see this. I honestly don't have a clue how I missed it, other than that I did have my 9 year old helping, so she could have had me sidetracked with other things. She was my engine cranker so I could time it.

I set it to 28 last night and while I had the plugs out I sprayed alot of Deep creep in all the plug holes. There was alot of Black deep creep coming out of the exhaust holes on the lower unit, just basically eating the carbon and draining it, with no plugs in. I then put the old plugs back in and she fired up like a champ. I then blew the crap out by running high RPMS until she quit smoking, then pulled some fouled out plugs, lol. I had to go buy new ones as they were pretty bad off, and they have only been in there for about 2 months if that long. I have not tried it with the new plugs, but I hope to get to the lake again this weekend.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Calling all Force 125 Owners

I think it is supposed to be set a little off, maybe 30, when static, then checked at running rpm. I read something about resetting timing while on the water running with the cover off. Don't try that alone. If you're getting excess fuel, check the fuel pump diaphram of the carbureator.

Re: Calling all Force 125 Owners

Ok,
Got her out to the lake this past weekend, and she was screaming. It was running perfect, no extra fuel or anything. it was pulling back up to the 4300 rpms, or so with the 17 pitch prop. I will be trying a 15 pitch next time out to see if I can get it higher in the RPM range, as I have one in sitting here, I had purchased, just have not yet tried it. Then we stopped and had a cookout, and then when we got back in the boat, radio was left on, the batteries went dead. They shouldn't have, so I will have them tested for bad cells, to see if that is why. But now the starter is bad, it will not spin fast enough to engage, so I have now taken that off to fix it or replace it, not sure yet.

The timing is much better at 28 for sure.

Thanks,
Bryan
