NE, nice to hear from you. It is too late for you to see this before you leave, it's July 4 now. But please let me know how the trip went.

Yes, my lovely wife and I are booked into the Inn at Christies Mill July 18-21. We hope to do day trips east, and maybe poke our bow out thru lock 45.

Greg

Sounds great Greg S you'll enjoy the area.. vacation was great good weather all week put some nice hours on the boat. Since your gonna be there during the week, you should be able to lock thru with very little wait time and be sure to head upstream to Big Chute the marine railroad ( lock 44) is a must see.

NE and Cuz, yes we are definitely going to Big Chute. Hopefully the weather will hold. I know we need the rain but... It's my holiday!

If it is like last year, weekday travel is the way to go, we had no wait times to speak of.

I have just purchased a Garmin GSD20 and an In Hull transducer to turn my GPSMAP276C into a sounder. I am going to test transducer locations tonight, then install this weekend before we leave on Monday.

Greg

NE, yes we are almost ready. Got to check the trailer, picked it up from my dads last night.

Must check the Notmars for chart 2202 and 2094.

I tested the GSD20 and transducer last night. It works great so I can install permanently this weekend. It almost went too well...

Edit: What are the water levels like? Are they way low?

Greg

The water levels are low below lock45 therefore there is not any room to miss a marker, the Severn river is always good since it is controlled in order for proper lock operation, but since you have a recent set of charts you should be fine, study your charts before you head out and make notes of the bouy numbers and keep in mind that Georgian Bay uses the international cardinal bouy system, since there is commercial shipping in the area. The river still uses upstream downstream method and is well marked.

NE, thanks for that. Yes I have been looking quite closely at the charts. The Potato Island Channel looks particularly narrow and challenging.

Greg

Re: calling Cuzner and Greg S

yes potato is very tight it is actually one of the worst spots for hazards actually saw a boater shear off the lower unit last sunday, the mistake some make is at the top of the channel near Honey Harbour you actually buzz close to the shoreline keeping between the shore and port marker (red), some think the hazards are close to shoreline and pass marker on the wrong side. If you can make your past Severn Sound and Potato channel then you have beat some of the worst parts of southern georgian bay. sounds like your on the right track you'll be fine, take your time if you get a bit confused stop and take a look around these are not places to keep motoring along when your not sure. I'm not trying to scare you, just giving a piece of friendly advise I hate to see a fellow boater on the the rocks.

Advice well given and taken, thank you.

I have the Georgian Bay PORTS guide and I also have the new Georgian Bay cruising DVD from Power Boat TV. It gives a different perspective from the book and charts.

Greg

Cuz, just trying to think, the only place I have stopped at in Barrie is the Boatmax/Doral store. There are a dozen other marine dealers between TO and Barrie on the highway. But I don't know if any would stock it. There is a chandlery in Ottawa, www.thechandleryonline.com. They have brick store.

In TO I deal with Masons Store in Port Credit they have a great chart room. www.thestoremasons.com

Off to pull the boat out now and get ready for the road trip to Port Severn on Monday. WhooHoo!

Greg
