Hey I have read some of your post about volvo prop shaft seals. I have talked to a few dealers here in mi they say there not seeing it. I have 2 in my storage building leaking from the bearing carrier area. 1 is a DP did they have issues with them also? thanks for your 2 cents, bob....

Re: Calling Mr. Rodbolt

only on the SX was there a design problem. they changed the installation tool a few years ago and this year changed the seal itself. finally. before this year I had used 2 cobra sealsback to back to eliminate the problem of the faulty seals.
most DP leaks are cused by worn seals and or worn seal surfaces. I am working on making a sleeve for the shaft but have not been back to it lately. its tough to tell someone that I am tossing 1100 dollars worth of gears and shafts for 2 grooves.

Re: Calling Mr. Rodbolt

ya they sent me a new tool and a letter about a change in the seal but nothing about delamb of the rubber and the metal sleve area. this DP has very little use only 50 hrs on the boat. have you saw the prop shaft groove up? or will the oil come from the split line? when JV first came out I could not belive how soft those propshafts were and still are. again thanks bob.......

rodbolt, I have the same problem telling them they need new gears because of the grooves. It would have been nice if they designed the shaft with a sleeve for the bearing and seals to ride on. I see it even worse on the input shaft yoke on the upper.

Re: Calling Mr. Rodbolt

I will work on the sleeve a bit more. I am having some trouble with the installation tooling. but I think if I make the ID of the sleeve .03 thicker and grind off the shaft I can make it work. the tube gear is not a problem. the inner shaft is the hard one to press on a sleeve cause the sleeve cannot be any larger than the existing shaft. I am also hunting to see if I can find tube gear seals that have the lips offset so it does not ride in the same groove. I have 2 duo prop units now that are non-usable due to bad shafts
everything else is perfect just torn up shaft surfaces.
if I make any progress Ill let all know.
just chaps me to tell someone that to fix the seal leaks you have to buy 1100 woth of gears. a 380 dollar shaft and 300 worth of bearings and misc stuff and 5 hours or so of my time. just for 4 little grooves.
