I have posted and listend and tried to fix from the responses. I have a 87 200hp johnson vro engine. I have just rebuilt the carbs today, ran all new fuel lines put in new omc fuel filters. I also put in this week a new flywheel because magnets had been broken, replaced 2 new power packs, new shift interrupt switch and all new spark plugs and wires. I also put in a new oil pressure sending unit for the vro pump. When I run the boat out of the water on the muffs it starts first shot and idles great. I built a tank to put the engine in and in the tank it runs at 1000-1100 rpms and shifts forward and reverse great it also starts up first shot and the interrupt switch drops the idle perfectly. The problem I have is it will not start in salt water and when I do get it started it stalls almost right away. The rpms run about 800 it seems like it does not want to get the fuel. Trying to go forward or reverse will stall the engine. My questions are what else can it be and also how high should the rpms run from the salt to fresh water.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

mako2578 I don't think its a salt water fresh water problem. It could very well be a timing problem. The ear muffs force water tru the system without any back pressure. The tank you built is probally no better in the back pressure department. Check to see if the timming is advaceing with throttle movement. There is a nylon/plastic piece on the timer base that needs to be able to move freely this means no grease or dirt. A small amount of light oil is ok.You can whatch this movement in the driveway. I went crazy tring to find out what was wrong with my engine. It was this tiny piece that was dammaged! My motor ran fine in the driveway but was hard starting in the water and stalled when put in gear. Its a 1987 engine and if you never cleaned the part its probally dirty. Pull the fly wheel and timer base and check to see its not worn or cracked!
steve

steve.
Is it possible to see if this piece moves without taking the flywheel off.
Eric.

steve

I pulled the flywheel off and did have some grease and gunk on the adjustment. I cleaned it off and put everything back together but will have to wait till tomorrow to see if it fixed the problem. Thank you for the information.

eric

Re: Calling OMC Guru's

Started boat on muffs today and started better then ever after fixing the crud on the timing linkage and copper plates. But when I put it in the water same thing it just backfired and would not idle took it home back on muffs and started fine ran on muffs at 1200 rpms at idle but will not run in water. I then took the boat to a marina and they tried for about an hour and could not even get if figured out. Luckily the guy did not charge me because even he was stumped.

please dont put that big engine and run it in a barrel. A flusher should be o.k. and of course the water /river/ lake is the ultimate. Of course it could be anything...mainly the fuel system as said. just dont barrelize this fine engine.

I have 1990 60hp evinrude. I also cannot get it to run in the lake. I have rebuilt the carbs, replaced fuel filter, replaced the fuel line, and put in new spark plugs. At home on the muffs it will idle about 1100 to 1200 rpms but when i put it in the lake it won't do anything. If you find out what the problem is let me know.
