Ok, so I have decided I need the Yamaha Command-Link (NMEA 2000/NMEA2K) network to reliably get water pressure information from my 2008 F150 to my console. The boat is a Bennington 2275 RLi pontoon.

I will be getting new gauges as part of this process, and I've noticed that the Yamaha digital gauges are not cheap. So, I'm using this thread in the hopes of figuring out everything I should/could get as part of this installation.

Here's what I was thinking about.

1. I noticed the Murphy Helmview display (HV1000) and like it. I have no idea what it costs, but was actually thinking of two side by side on the console. One would be setup with engine info/gauges, and the other would be a GPS chartplotter. They have pictures that show a single screen set up with both, but it seems like it might be too small for that much info. Anyone have one? Comments? Comparable products?

Presumably I could have screens in two different places showing the same information, right? Such as two locations displaying GPS/Chartplotter info, or a fore and aft display showing engine info.

2. FFs on my lake typically don't offer much info because the lake's too shallow, but I do like bottom tracking to tell me when there's a drop-off or bare spot in the weeds. What NMEA2K device would you recommend to feed such info to a display like the Murphy HV1000?

3. Steering? Is there a way to remote the steering to something like the remote on a Minkota Co-Pilot? I've no plans on remotely driving at any speed above trolling.

4. Forward/Reverse/Trottle. Are there any components that would incorporate these functions? When trolling alone from the front of the boat, it would be ideal to be able to shut the motor off or put it into reverse.

5. Trolling motor integration. Any way to incorporate an electric trolling motor into the LAN such that it can be controlled the way the Minkota Co-pilot does?

I'm not trying to spend millions here, but I'd like to see what could be done and then figure out how much it would cost (or see if I can find cheaper alternatives to suggestions made.)

Well, your Murphy displays are $2800 each.

So......without reinventing the wheel you could do all those functions using a Large screen Garmin MFD like a 4210, a GSD 21 sounder module and a GHP 10 auto pilot for roughly the price of just the Murphy displays.

If you want a seperate display for your gauges you could use a GMI 10 data display which list for something like $350

Dingbat,

Thanks for the great advice. I've spent the last several hours going over all of the Garmin products you mentioned (and more) and also Raymarine electronics.

One thing I'm not finding, however, is the ability to control the speed of the motor. More specifically, I would like to be able to shut off the motor, and control the forward/reverse. This is valuable while trolling as much of my water is weedy. The motor sucks up junk that can stop cooling water even at 1mph. The solution is simple enough, just turn off the motor (at which point the water in the engine back-flushes the blockage out) and start up again. Also, weeds on the prop are blown off by simply putting it in neutral, then reverse for a few seconds.

Any suggestions?

Its really surprising to read what I have about NMEA 2000. Looks like we're basically talking about SNMP over PC Net. Connectionless datagrams (UDP I assume) spewed onto an unreliable network at 250kbps such that it can't support video or even transactions for that matter.

One has to wonder why they didn't simply go with Ethernet? What's even funnier is that marine networks prior to this were even slower...sheesh.
