From the discussion in the towing forum I see you are a Dodge wrench.
I am getting ready to trade trucks and am moving up to the diesel.
Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4X4.
How reliable is the 5.9 diesel?
How about the 4 speed auto?
What is the "Thunder Road" package?
Thanks.

Re: Calling SuperNova

You mistook me for the "real Dodge wrench". You are looking for Supernova. However, the Dodge diesel has been a good engine but I can't say the same for Mopar automatic transmissions. Perhaps the version used with the diesel is a bit more robust than their gas counterparts.

Thanks, but the manual is out of the question. I have some problems with my legs and can't stand to shift anymore.

I am all over the board with polotic's SBN, and it give's me great pleasure (that's another story) Simple question, new or used......Ive been doing this car thing for a long time. Silver is right dodge's auto is not quite up to par, the chevy's durmax is a stud and if you change the oil every 5000 mile's on a Ford you will feel in 7th heaven. Now new is a whole different matter.. However complicated the Ford own's the market

Yea TG, I know but I can't touch a Ford SD for what I can get a new (2007) 2500 for.
That is the SLT quad cab 4X4 with the 6.7L cummins and 6 speed auto for 37K and that's loaded up.

Yea, no 2007 SDs around.
Cloth for me.
I have 2 dealers that really work with people to get them what they want and they can't be beat in their prices.
My local dealer says no way they can sell me a truck for that.
I show them the sales contract and they just can't believe it.

Re: Calling SuperNova

Sorry, I was away most of the weekend. The 5.9 was the best diesel on the market bar none. The big automatics we used behind them were rock solid. Dodge earned its trans rep on the light duty units in caravans and dakotas and some of the medium to light duty units in the 1500's. The ones used behind the v-10's and the diesels were solid. (46re, 47re,and 48 re). That being said the press is still out on the new 6.7. It's just a bigger version of the 5.9, but it has a lot of extra do-dads on it that may be a problem(we are already having turbo actuator issues on it)
and the same with the 6 speed- it's in it's first year and so far so good, but I can't give you any reliable feedback on it yet. But if you can pick up a leftover '06 with the 5.9.......

Re: Calling SuperNova

So would I be better off with the '07 6.7 and 46re or the 5.9 with 4 speed auto?

Re: Calling SuperNova

Personally, I'd look for a leftover 5.9. I mean the 6.7 looks good, longevity wise, but the 5.9 is already proven, and it can run on any fuel, the 6.7 is picky and calls for Ultra-low sulfur fuel instead of commonly available(right now) Low-sulfur fuel. The six speed auto is an Aisin-Warner piece, they have a real good rep and it is all you can get behind the 6.7 in an automatic. I really don't think you will have a problem with the newer truck, but we don't have enough experience with it yet to say for sure. But they've added an EGR valve and cooler, 3 exhaust temp probes and 2 O2 sensors for the exhaust particulate filter and regeneration system, so what does that tell you about the added complexity of the new engine/truck?

The second question you asked earlier was about the Thunder Road package. It gets you differnt things on different series trucks. On the 2500 it gets nicer wheels and center caps, tow package, rear slider window, fog lamps and Siruis ready radio.

Re: Calling SuperNova

As far as I am aware you can't get an '07 with a 5.9.

Re: Calling SuperNova

Also, for clarification: The Aisin-Warner is only available in the cab-chassis trucks. The 2500 and 3500 gets a 68rfe trans. Both are six-speed automatics. This is in addition to the 6-speed manuals offered in all the trucks.

P.S. I just looked in Tech-connect and it looks like the 5.9 was still available in '07. Must be changeover year. My bad.
